Imagine what a trip through the mall or better yet... Disneyland would be like with NO MAP! You may have heard about that incredible Ferris Wheel that is a mile high and actually have to search for and hour to find it, or worse yet! You may end up with a defective seatbelt in the wrong line and find yourself traveling through "It's a Small World "over and over and over. And over. You get the picture.
Don't get me wrong! I just spent a week there, and I did go on Small World. I love the key of G major...and I really think blingy singing people from every country are entertaining. (Yes, I have perfect pitch and the song "It's a Small World After All" never changes key for the entire 15 minute ride.... but it does use a I, V7, V7, I harmonic progression in case you were curious.)
At any rate, I found my map extremely helpful. And the "Mouse-wait" app on my iphone was even better! It listed where I was in the park, real time waits for the rides, the nearest diet coke stand (YES!!!!), Park open and close information, Parade schedules.... all at the push of a button. I saved myself a lot of wandering around.
So my point is this: Do YOU have Musical GPS system? (GPS actually means Gnarly Pianist Sightseer) that tells you where you are at all times in your music? When was the last time you REALLY knew what a piece was all about, the articulations, the dynamics, the key signature, the direction of the melody... which hand even HAS the melody... before you just start wandering around through the music.
I have developed this this of questions that I give my prep – intermediate level students to use before they are allowed to begin. Click Here to print them out...
Until next time... Sight read with purpose, and use your musical GPS!
