About Singing Lessons

The voice is the only instrument you carry with you everywhere, and also the most personal — which is exactly what makes singing lessons feel different from learning anything else. There’s no external object to adjust when something goes wrong. The instrument is you, and learning to use it well means developing awareness of things you can’t see: breath support, resonance, how your soft palate lifts, what your larynx is doing. That intimacy is what draws people to singing, and what makes a good teacher so valuable early on.

The first real challenge is that beginners can’t monitor themselves the way a guitarist watches their fretting hand. Most untrained singers push from the throat rather than supporting from the diaphragm, which limits range, causes fatigue, and can lead to damage over time. A good teacher addresses this immediately — not with complex theory, but by getting you to feel what correct support feels like before it becomes muscle memory. Learning to breathe for singing, before anything else, is the right sequence.

Genre matters more with voice than almost any other instrument. Classical technique — bel canto, head voice, operatic placement — is a very different discipline from contemporary pop, musical theater, gospel, or rock. A classically trained teacher isn’t the wrong choice, but if you want to sound like a soul or pop singer, you need someone who teaches in that idiom. Ask specifically whether they work with students in your target style, and whether they have recordings of their students to share.

Three singers worth studying closely: Aretha Franklin, whose command of breath, phrasing, and dynamics remains a masterclass in everything that separates a good singer from an unforgettable one. Freddie Mercury, whose range and theatrical commitment showed what training and raw instinct can achieve together. Sam Cooke, whose tone and control were so natural-sounding that it’s easy to miss the craft underneath — which is exactly why he’s worth studying.

For early milestones, “Hallelujah” — in any of its well-known versions — is a reliable goal because it rewards breath control and dynamic shaping without demanding extreme range. Adele’s “Someone Like You” is a strong intermediate target: the emotional delivery matters as much as the technique, and a good teacher will use it to work on phrasing and support simultaneously. For classical-leaning students, Schubert’s “Ave Maria” is achievable earlier than it sounds and teaches sustained tone and vowel placement in ways that carry over to everything else.

Record yourself every time you practice. Singers are the worst judges of their own sound in the room — what you hear inside your head is not what anyone else hears, and a recording almost always reveals something worth working on.
