About Piano Lessons
Of all the instruments to start on, piano has a unique advantage: the notes are right in front of you. Every pitch in Western music is laid out across the keyboard in a single, logical line — there's no guessing where a note lives, no embouchure to develop, no string to find by feel. This visual clarity makes piano one of the best instruments for understanding music itself, not just playing it. Students who begin on piano tend to develop stronger ears and better music theory intuition than those who start on almost any other instrument.
That directness comes with a trade-off. Piano demands independence from both hands almost immediately — the left hand holding chords or a bass line while the right carries the melody — and that coordination takes genuine time to build. A good teacher will scaffold this patiently, introducing hands separately before combining them, and will pay close attention to technique from the very first lesson. Poor hand position and tension are easy habits to form and much harder to undo later.
When choosing a teacher, ask about their experience with the style you want to learn. Classical, pop, and jazz piano are taught quite differently. Someone trained entirely in conservatory method may struggle to teach a teenager who wants to play Elton John or Billy Joel; a jazz-focused teacher may not be the right fit for someone drawn to Beethoven. The best teachers can span styles, or at least know their lane.
For popular songs that reward early effort, Beethoven's “Für Elise” remains the quintessential first milestone — recognizable, achievable, and genuinely beautiful. Adele's “Someone Like You” is a strong intermediate goal, built around a satisfying rolling left-hand pattern that beginners find motivating once they have the basics down. Yiruma's “River Flows in You” has become a modern benchmark: approachable enough for motivated beginners, polished enough to impress.
Practice every day, even for just fifteen minutes. Piano technique lives in muscle memory, and short daily sessions outperform weekly marathons every single time.
