About Percussion Lessons

Percussion is one of the broadest categories in music — it encompasses the snare drum, the marimba, the timpani, the xylophone, the vibraphone, and dozens of other instruments that share only the common principle of being struck, shaken, or scraped to produce sound. A student who says they want to learn percussion is actually choosing between several distinct disciplines that require different techniques, different music reading skills, and often different teachers. Being clear about which direction you want to go makes a significant difference in how you start.

For orchestral and band percussion, the fundamentals are reading multiple staves of notation simultaneously, developing consistent stroke technique across both hands, and learning to move between instruments during a performance with accuracy and efficiency. Mallet instruments — marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, and marimba — require developing independent four-mallet technique, which has its own logic and physical demands. Drum kit playing is technically percussion but is a separate discipline that most percussionists either specialize in or treat as complementary study rather than primary training.

When choosing a teacher, ask specifically which area of percussion they focus on. Someone who primarily teaches drum kit may not have the background to prepare a student for school band percussion, and a classically trained percussionist may not be the right fit for a student whose goal is playing in a rock or pop context. Ask also about mallet technique specifically — this is where percussion teaching most clearly separates those who have formal training from those who learned by doing.

Three percussionists whose work demonstrates the range of what is possible: Evelyn Glennie is the most visible solo percussionist of the modern era, profoundly deaf and deeply musical, whose performances demonstrate that rhythm and pitch are felt as much as heard. Lionel Hampton brought the vibraphone into jazz and showed that a mallet instrument could hold its own against trumpet and saxophone in a swinging ensemble. Keiko Abe has written and recorded more music for solo marimba than anyone in history and her compositions are the standard repertoire for serious marimba students worldwide.

The xylophone solo in Saint-Saëns’ “Fossils” from Carnival of the Animals is a natural early goal for mallet students — short, recognizable, and a good test of two-mallet technique. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in its marimba transcription is the intermediate milestone that most serious mallet students work through, and it teaches legato phrasing and musical shaping in ways that percussive repertoire alone does not. For snare drum, learning to play a clean roll and a rudimental march is the equivalent foundational work that everything else builds on.

Let the mallet or stick rebound freely after each stroke — gripping on impact dampens the resonance of the instrument and destroys the tone that makes mallet percussion sound alive rather than mechanical.
