Most North American mandolin teachers come from the bluegrass or folk side; classical mandolin teachers are rarer but do exist, particularly in regions with Italian-American musical traditions. Ask what tradition a teacher plays in before committing, and listen to them play if possible — the instrument sounds notably different across styles.

Three mandolin players worth spending time with: Bill Monroe essentially invented bluegrass mandolin and his recordings demonstrate the rhythmic chop and melodic invention that the style is built on. Chris Thile has expanded what the instrument can do into jazz, classical, and contemporary composition in ways that have introduced it to entirely new audiences. David Grisman developed “Dawg music” — a jazz-influenced acoustic style — and his collaborations with Jerry Garcia and Yo-Yo Ma demonstrate the instrument’s versatility at a high level.

“Whiskey Before Breakfast” is a standard early tune in the folk and bluegrass world — melodically clear, satisfying to play at a slow tempo, and a good test of basic picking mechanics. “Mandolin Rain” by Bruce Hornsby, while not a traditional piece, is a recognizable and motivating beginner goal for students from a pop background. Vivaldi’s Mandolin Concerto in C major is the classical milestone — not as technically demanding as it sounds, and genuinely beautiful.

Practice tremolo at a tempo where every note is perfectly even before increasing speed — rushing the tremolo creates a lopsided stroke that is very hard to correct once it becomes habitual.
