About Composition Lessons

Learning to compose is learning to organize musical ideas with intention — deciding not just what notes to play, but why those notes, in that order, at that moment. It is the most open-ended discipline in music and the one most students approach without realizing how much structure underlies the freedom. A piece that sounds spontaneous has usually been the result of considerable craft, and understanding that craft — how phrases are built, how tension and release work, how rhythm and harmony interact — is what composition lessons actually teach.

The honest challenge for most beginners is the gap between hearing something in their head and being able to realize it on paper or in a DAW. That gap closes slowly, through a combination of theory, ear training, and sheer volume of writing. A good composition teacher will assign short exercises constantly — write a 16-bar melody, harmonize a bass line, write a theme and two variations — because composing is a skill that develops through doing, not through studying what others have done. Students who wait to feel “ready” before writing typically wait a long time.

When choosing a teacher, ask about their own compositional background and what styles they work in. A teacher who writes exclusively for string quartet may not be the right fit for someone interested in film scoring or electronic composition. Also ask whether they integrate notation software into lessons — for students who don’t read music fluently, tools like MuseScore or Sibelius can accelerate the translation from idea to page significantly.

Three composers whose work rewards close study: Johann Sebastian Bach, whose counterpoint in the Inventions and Well-Tempered Clavier demonstrates how independent voices can coexist with a logic so clear it still serves as the foundation of harmony teaching. Ludwig van Beethoven, whose Fifth Symphony is a masterclass in developing a simple motif across a large-scale structure. Claude Debussy, whose approach to harmony and texture in the Préludes broke from everything that came before and opened up a vocabulary that composers are still drawing on today.

Analyzing existing works is as important as writing new ones. Transcribe a piece you love by ear, then compare your transcription to the score — the gaps between what you heard and what was actually written are exactly where your ear needs to develop. Beethoven’s piano sonatas, Bach’s chorales, and Radiohead’s chord progressions are all equally valid material for this kind of study.

Write something every day, even if it is only four bars — the creative habit matters more than the quality of any single session.
