About Me

I am an exceptionally talented person in many areas and music happens to be an area I have excelled at. I grew up loving music in a small town in Lompoc, Ca. I started early by singing with my mother at church functions. I was accepted into school programs starting in Middle School- Band, Concert Choir and the advanced group Select Choir. I later excelled in High School joining all Choirs: Concert, Womens’, and the advanced Madrigal group. I was the first freshman to be allowed into the advanced choir! Band was a big part of my musical development as well: Playing the flute in middle school, playing the piano high school Jazz Band, and playing the Xylophone and bells in Marching band.

I also found many of my friends and classmates would ask me to help them with their voice training and musical skills. I even convinced the principle of her High School to allow me to organize a Jazz Choir that became the hit of the school. During my high school years I took traditional piano lessons from an exceptional teacher named Julie Pike. I learned the piano slowly by learning the notes, rhythm, tempo, timing, key signatures, and many other ways of reading music. I found it difficult and often frustrating to develop my talent in music theory; I often wanted an easier way to learn piano with out having to learn how to read the notes and all the theory. I would often say to my mom, "Isn't there an easier way to learn the piano? I just want to be able to play the music!" I discovered that much later in life after I was proficient in piano. (See paragraphs: 5-6 "Simply Music")

Later in my life I moved to Carlsbad, CA where I studied voice with John Hundington for 4 years, he helped give me the foundation of a great voice along with many wonderful ways of perfecting such a voice. I then moved onto Utah where I served and fulfilled a full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I served in the Salt Lake City area on Temple Square and also in Oregon to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. After I served, I moved back to Utah in the Provo area and studied voice with Martha Glissmeyer for a little more than two years. Martha gave me the further knowledge I needed to excel my voice training, she truly taught me how to break free my voice and let my natural ability come out, she also gave me many more ways to continue to have a beautiful voice come out with ease.

I have been teaching voice for about 5 years, I taght traditional for 3 years and Simply Music Way for the past two years. This has been an exciting adventure for me to undertake; it has given me so many wonderful opportunities to help people develop their musical abilities in a natural way. I teach you how to use what you have, to produce wonderful music. I have taken on Betty Jeanne Chipman's guidelines for singing the natural way in her book, "Singing With Mind Body & Soul." Betty was one of Martha Glissmeyer’s teachers when she was in school. Betty's teachings are based on a natural approach to singing.

In my most recent discovery of musical development I discovered a new way of learning the piano: the "Simply Music" method. This is an Australian developed method that teaches you to play the piano immediately from your very first lessons. This method is not a reading based method like the traditional piano lessons I was
taught; it's a playing based method. This method not only has you playing from your very first lessons, but you are playing an arrangement of styles: Pop, Classical, Blues, Jazz, and Accompaniment pieces, it also teaches you have to create music of your own and use improvisation.

When I discovered this method I was so excited to get started and thought back to the first time I wanted to learn piano; I wanted a simpler way of learning without learning all the theory and reading of music before you could play. I now have a way of teaching playing the piano before learning the music theory and a wonderful way to further my music education as well as be able to teach piano from a playing based method. This method also teaches you to create your own songs and learn how to use improvisation. which helps in creating our own music. When you learn how to play this way it will make music a life long companion rather than just a hobby.

Gone are the grueling days of practice and drilling. Here and now are the days of enjoying playing the piano and singing!

My Musical Influences

I have been told my music brings joy into all the lives it touches. I have sung and played the piano in churches, recitals, plays, concerts, and funerals. When I sing I love to watch those that are listening and I usually find everyone focused on me; Each individual is engaged in the performance. Many people will cry and it brings joy to my heart to know I can share my love of music with them.

I have also been told my voice is so Clear and Beautiful that you can't help but be totally focused on it.

Student Reviews

Ogden, UT

Learning to play the piano has always been a desire of mine and until I heard about "Simpy Music," I had a hard time getting into it. Under the direction of Maggie I have learned numerous tunes and am looking forward to gaining more knowledge of music. I have found it to be very rewarding and fulfilling and it truly is becoming my dream come true. Diane
