About Me

John Reed is an active fine art music composer and concert pianist, performing all across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. He has written for many different ensembles, including string trio, choral, solo piano, art song, string quartet, and more. His works push the boundaries of tonal and post-tonal music, exploring contrapuntal concepts in a new harmonic language.

John has studied with notable teachers such as Paul Hoffmann, Dr. Benjamin C.S. Boyle, and Dr. Stefan Young. From these influences, he performs with a more European style of performance practice and piano technique. In his composition studies, John was taught counterpoint, harmony, and orchestration in the style of Nadia Boulanger of the Paris School.

In August 2018, John graduated from Westminster Choir College of Rider University with highest honors, receiving his B.M in Music Composition, History, and Theory, with a focus in Piano Performance. During his studies there, John received a scholarship for his high academic marks, and won the Ruth and Raymond Young Composition Prize in 2017 for his orchestral work, "The Events of a Normal Day", which was premiered by the Westminster Community Orchestra in April 2017, under the baton of Ruth Ochs.

John has been the Director of Music at Our Saviour, Polish National Catholic Church, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey since 2016. In early Spring 2018, Trinity United Methodist Church appointed John as their Director of Music and Principle Pianist. In Summer 2018, John joined the HAA faculty as the newest member of their piano department.
