About Me

I am a native of Decatur and currently live in the Emory area. I have been teaching piano since 1977.

My Musical Education Background

I am a graduate of North Georgia College in Dahlonega with bachelor's degrees in physical education and music education. I received my master of music degree in piano from the University of Mississippi.

Genres and Subjects Taught

Some of the methods I use are Faber & Faber Piano Adventures, Frances Clark's Music Tree, and Alfred's Basic Piano Library, as well as others by Alfred, Bastien, Noona, and Glover.

Along with the method books, my students enjoy playing supplementary pieces by Dennis Alexander, Martha Mier, Jon George, Lynn Freeman Olson, William Gillock, and others. Classical music is introduced as soon as the student is ready.

For more advanced students, I enjoy working with them on standard classical literature, as well as supplementary teaching pieces in many styles.

Learning about different composers is a part of each lesson, too. During the lesson, I play a piece of music for the student, and we talk briefly about the composer.

A little time is spent at each lesson working on the student's technique at the piano. For younger students, these are very basic exercises planned to build their finger strength and dexterity. For more advanced students, exercises may include playing scales and chords, Hanon or Czerny, or short pieces written to help the student learn to play in all different keys.

Lesson Rates

Tuition is $160 per month, payable at the first lesson of the month.

My Certifications and Awards

I hold certification as a piano teacher through Georgia Music Teachers Association.

My Musical Influences

As a child studying piano, I had several wonderful teachers ... but I hated piano lessons! When I got to college, though, I realized that those demanding teachers and my mother's determination that I practice regularly had helped me become a very good pianist. I chose to continue to study piano and grew to love everything about making music!

Since I did not enjoy piano as a child, one of my goals as a teacher is to make lessons enjoyable for my own students while still being demanding!

I hope, too, that parents and students realize that the enjoyment comes from being able to play WELL and that regular, consistent practice is the key to reaching that goal.
