About Me

Belinda Juang is the owner of and piano instructor at Belinda’s Piano Studio, which is located in San Diego, CA. Belinda has been teaching piano for over 8 years to a variety of children ages five and up and is devoted to all her students. Belinda is also passionate about psychology and uses her knowledge in that to advise and shape how she teaches. Belinda has had the opportunity to practice clinical psychotherapy with children and families as a registered associate marriage and family therapist and applies that experience of interacting with children to her pedagogy as well. In piano lessons, Belinda strives to teach each child with a personalized curriculum that acknowledges and enhances his or her strengths. In fact, one of Belinda's favorite aspects about teaching piano is nurturing and transforming struggling students into outstanding, confident performers. While piano and music might not be a future career for many, the study of piano can serve as a solid foundation to appreciating music and developing emotional awareness and various other character skills.

My Musical Education Background

Belinda has received a dual bachelor’s degree in piano performance and psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. There, Belinda had a unique opportunity to study with and take lessons from two piano professors - Professor Christopher Harding and Dr. John Ellis. Prior to college, Belinda had opportunities to study with a variety of other piano professors at the various music camps and events she attended. A few of those professors included Peter Takacs of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Thomas Schumacher of Eastman School of Music, and Brian Ganz of Peabody Conservatory. Each of these professors have impacted and shaped Belinda as a person and as a pianist.

As a first generation Asian American who grew up in a musical home, Belinda teaches with a mix of Western and Eastern values. Belinda understands and respects the need for balancing structure and allowing individual freedom, and she spends time in her lessons listening to and helping each student find their own balance between discipline and individuality. Belinda’s goal as a classical piano teacher is to empower and equip her students with the appropriate tools to become thoughtful musicians, self-motivated and diligent learners, and musically creative and imaginative individuals.

On top of her bicultural background, Belinda is also deeply fascinated by the intersections of psychology, neurology, and music. The mind is the finest instrument of all and a significant influence on the body and each individual’s development. Beyond learning notes and reading music, learning piano is a process of learning about oneself and understanding the way one thinks (also known as metacognition). Belinda strives to challenge students to learn to self-motivate, critique, and problem-solve difficulties in their pieces. She highlights how music, attitudes, and posture impacts emotions and moods and provides students with alternative options. Ultimately, piano lessons serve as a way to equip students not only to develop their artistic skills and emotional sensitivities, but also to help them achieve their personal goals and dreams. The study of piano can serve as a basis to developing various character skills, such as learning to persevere by challenging your mind to conceptualize problems from different perspectives or thinking outside the box. These cognitive skills can easily be applied to a variety of situations outside of music. Learning piano can be difficult and requires patience and discipline, but the results are rewarding. In the end, playing piano should not be a dreaded task; it should be an enjoyable activity!
