From Age 6 to Age 98: How a Harrisburg Jazz Pianist Builds Real Musicians, One Tailored Lesson at a Time

Katie Rudolph has been playing piano professionally for more than 45 years and teaching privately for over 35 — long enough to have worked with students ranging from a 6-year-old just finding the keys to a 98-year-old returning to them. Based in Harrisburg, PA, she teaches piano and general music with a philosophy rooted in a simple belief: making music is something each of us can do, and the goal of a lesson is to make a student want to come back.

“I completely expected that he would play the same things as boy #1. But NO!!! Katie took a completely different approach with him. She taught my one son how to improvise and played jazz improv with him, while the other son is taking a more classical tract. My boys are able to improvise at home, make up their own songs, and play from ear a song they hear at church or on the radio.”

— Bethany Newcomer, Harrisburg — parent of two students

Harrisburg Magazine readers have recognized that approach eight times over — voting her 'Simply the Best Musician' twice and 'Readers' Choice Musician' six times. She has also been inducted into the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz Hall of Fame, a credential that reflects a career performing as well as teaching. That performing background shapes how she teaches: students work through technique, theory, repertoire, ear training, sight reading, and — for those who want it — improvisation and chord symbols. The curriculum isn't fixed, though. It bends to fit the student in front of her.

That flexibility shows up most clearly when the same teacher works with two very different learners in the same household. Bethany Newcomer of Harrisburg enrolled one son, was impressed, then brought her second. She expected the lessons to look identical. They didn't. One son went down a jazz improvisation path; the other followed a classical track. Both, she says, can now improvise at home, compose their own pieces, and pick out songs by ear after hearing them at church or on the radio. That kind of outcome — students making music independently, away from the lesson — is exactly what Katie says she is working toward.

“I am a classically trained adult pianist, and I took a semester of jazz lessons from Katie Rudolph. We worked through a variety of materials - scales, improv technique, improv creation, and standard tunes. She also lent me a jazz album (or several) each week to expand my listening skills and repertoire. Overall, it was a very productive and enjoyable semester!”

— Charity Judson, Hershey — adult student

Adult students describe a similar experience. Charity Judson, a classically trained pianist from Hershey, came to Katie specifically for jazz. Over one semester, they covered scales, improvisation technique, improv creation, and standard tunes. Katie also lent her jazz albums each week to develop her listening vocabulary alongside her playing. Ed Beck, another adult student in Harrisburg, came in from a different angle entirely: returning to piano after more than 50 years away and starting essentially from scratch. He describes every lesson as enjoyable — and notes, with some humor, that the piano, unlike a bicycle, does not simply come back on its own.

What runs through nearly every review is a specific quality that Katie describes herself as prioritizing: patience. Tim L. of Harrisburg calls it 'seemingly interminable patience,' paired with high expectations and real challenges. Colleen, also from Harrisburg, points to something more concrete — Katie's ability to explain exactly why scales and exercises matter, in terms specific enough that students end up wanting to do them rather than tolerating them. And one review, left by Lora Crowder of Harrisburg, offers perhaps the clearest measure of what a teacher can mean over the long run: she wrote it while watching her son Paul Bratcher perform his doctoral recital at George Mason University, and she credits Katie for setting him on that path.

“As I sit here and watch my son Paul Bratcher play his Doctoral recital at George Mason University. I owe it all to Ms. Katie.”

— Lora Crowder, Harrisburg — parent of former student
