David James Productions Voice Studio

From Singing in Her Car to Performing for 100 People: How a TV Composer Built a Voice Studio in Elverta

David James, the instructor behind David James Productions Voice Studio in Elverta, CA, is not primarily a voice teacher who dabbled in the industry. He composed and sang the theme packages for the NBC Sunday TODAY show and The Drew Barrymore Show — both Emmy-nominated — and has had original songs placed on TBS's Cougar Town, CBS, Bravo's Millionaire Matchmaker, and in a Prius regional commercial. That production background shapes what he offers students: not just vocal technique, but a working knowledge of what it actually takes to perform and record professionally.

James holds a Bachelor's degree in Radio and Television from San Francisco State University, a certificate from Berklee College of Music, and is a Sing Inc Certified Voice Instructor. He began playing piano at age four, added drums at eight, and picked up guitar and singing at sixteen. He currently performs live and on YouTube with his band Fate Under Fire while simultaneously teaching roughly 70 private students and continuing to compose and sing for national television. The studio in Elverta offers in-person lessons as well as online sessions for students who can't make the drive.

What makes the setup unusual is the scope of what's included in a standard lesson. Beyond one-on-one coaching, students have access to professional studio recording during their lesson time, a music video team, quarterly performance recitals, and songwriting development. Students are also given detailed homework assignments intended to keep progress moving between sessions. For a parent dropping off a child, there's a waiting room with a big screen TV, magazines, and water — a small detail, but one that signals the studio operates like a professional facility rather than a spare bedroom.

The student reviews across multiple Sacramento-area neighborhoods tell a consistent story: people who arrived afraid to sing left performing in front of crowds. Brittany from Roseville went from practicing exclusively in her car to singing and dancing on stage in front of more than 100 people. Steven from Woodland described arriving afraid to sing at all and ultimately performing confidently in front of hundreds. A parent of a five-year-old noted that even her daughter came home saying 'he is so good to me mommy' — a detail that points to how James adjusts his approach across a wide age range.

Reviewers with prior experience at other studios are particularly pointed in their comparisons. One self-described advanced singer wrote that she had 'gone through vocal coaches like toilet paper' before finding James, specifically calling out that he doesn't limit students to a single style but builds well-rounded technique across pop, rock, R&B, and musical theater. Another student noted that James opened a door to songwriting she had never expected — she's now actively writing songs, something she described as inconceivable before her lessons began. For students in the greater Sacramento area looking for a teacher whose own career has intersected with national broadcast and commercial media, David James Productions offers a rare combination of technical instruction and industry experience.
