About Me

Hello, my name is Patricia Lazzara and I have had many years of experience teaching flute, also piccolo, alto flute all levels and beginning piano. It is a great joy for me to work with my flute students and to help them achieve their flute goals! My flute studio is located in Ramsey and Haskell NJ and online virtual. I am the director of the Ridgewood HS Flute Ensemble and co-director of NJ Flute Choir Day. I am a founding member of Ensemble Bella Luce, a non profit flute and piano duo and a founding member of Uptown Flutes, one of the premiere flute ensembles in the country. I am a Miyazawa Flute Artist and the winner of several competitions and recipient of many awards. I have performed in Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Arts Center in Washington, DC, and Giants Stadium in addition to several concert tours of Italy. In the summers my Italian concerts have included performances at the Assisi Performing Arts Festival, Summer Music in Tuscany, with I Filamonica di Napoli and this summer I will be on the faculty of the Interharmony Music Festival in Acqui Terme. PLease visit my website to learn more about me.

My Musical Education Background

My musical education background: I attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA as a flute performance major, studying with Carole Morgan, Bernard Goldberg and Ethan Stang of the Pittsburgh Symphony. I graduated from The Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, CT with a flute performance degree studying with John Wion of the NYC Opera Orchestra.

Genres and Subjects Taught

I tailor my lessons and approach personally for each student. While the basics of proper hand position, tone production and rhythm are always emphasized with great importance, if a student wants to learn a piece by a certain composer or a style we will work with it. Lessons are always fun and it is my goal to have the student carry a sense of accomplishment about their flute playing for each lesson!

Lesson Rates

My lesson fees are the same if in person or online and are as follows:
30 minutes - $65, 45 minutes- $70 and 60 minutes - $75.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

I teach all ages - from 5 years old on the recorder to eventually moving on to flute, through elementary school, middle school, high school, college and adults. I love working with all ages of flutists! Many of my students have won chairs in Bergen County Band, junior and senior regional auditions, and All State. I encourage my students to participate in these auditions, and also to participate in NJ Flute Choir Day which is always great fun. In June we have a student recital where everyone can perform a solo, it is always a wonderful day!

My Certifications and Awards

When in HS I was a winner of county, regional and All State band auditions, placing First chair 3 times. In college, I was principal flute in the orchestra and performed in Carnegie Hall for the first time. When I started my professional career as a flutist and a teacher, I won the Artist International Competition 3 times and performed in Weill Recital Hall and Cami Hall in NYC. I have won several competitions from the National Flute Association including the Professional Flute Choir and the Convention Performers Competition. I also won the North Jersey Philharmonic Concerto Competition performing the Mozart G Major Flute Concerto. I was recently nominated as Flute Advocate of the Year based on my commissioning efforts for a new piece by Italian composer Armando Ghidoni, entitled “The Arc of Light.”, the recording of which is available on all streaming platforms. My article about the commission was included in the Flute View magazine. My group Ensemble Bella Luce was also a recent winner of the Ridgewood Arts Foundation Award.

My Musical Influences

My favorite flutists include Denis Bouriakov, James Galway, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Jasmine Choi, Emmanuel Pahud. They are all so wonderful and inspirational. There are also thousands of wonderful players all with something beautiful and musical to say.
