About Me
I am an experienced pianist and Suzuki-certified piano teacher who is passionate about helping all ages and types of learners express themselves through music. A hallmark of my teaching style is flexibility, finding each student's unique path to lifelong, joyful music making.
As a longtime resident of the DC metro area, I've raised my family in Arlington, VA, and enjoyed broadened musical experiences with my children over the years, including coaching chamber music, writing musical arrangements for small groups, and playing collaboratively with violin soloists and studios.
My Musical Education Background
In Youngstown, OH, I studied classical piano under MaryAnn La Lumia Hoffman and continued with jazz theory studies after earning the Piano Guild International HS Diploma. In 2025, I earned piano book 1 certification with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and maintain my continuing education in piano teaching approaches with Piano Inspires and similar pedagogical organizations. I am a member of the Suzuki Association, the American College of Musicians' Piano Guild, and the Music Teachers National Association and its Northern Virginia chapter.
Genres and Subjects Taught
Because every student should have the opportunity to develop musical expression, regardless of learning style, I aim to personalize each lesson. I rely on a variety of tools, tunes, and piano method books to guide students with warmth and confidence. Piano technique and musical ability are taught consistently across classical, Suzuki, pop, or jazz repertoire.
A typical private lesson with me may involve work on body mechanics---warmups to prepare muscles and prevent injury; scales and exercises---to get fingers moving together and independently, not for speed but for dexterity and accuracy; theory---as games, activity sheets, score study, or hands-on keyboard practice to build comfort from the foundation up, one step at a time; and repertoire---including just-right material, sightreadable music, and stretch/by-request tunes. Every person is different, so every lesson is different, even from week to week.
