About Viola Lessons

The viola is the middle voice of the string family — deeper and darker than the violin, warmer and more intimate than the cello — and it occupies a role in chamber music and the orchestra that is genuinely irreplaceable. Composers who understand the viola write for it with particular affection: Bartók, Walton, and Britten all produced works that exploit its distinctive timbre in ways that no other instrument could serve. Students who choose the viola tend to develop an ear for harmony and inner voices that solo instrument players sometimes miss, because the viola so often carries the music’s harmonic interior.

The physical demands are meaningfully different from the violin. The viola is larger, which means the left hand must stretch further to reach positions, and the bow arm must work harder to draw a full tone from thicker strings. Shoulder and neck strain are more common on viola than violin and should be addressed immediately if they appear — a teacher who takes setup and posture seriously from the beginning prevents the kind of chronic physical problems that force players to stop entirely. Intonation, as with all fretless string instruments, depends entirely on trained ears and physical memory rather than any external guide.

Most viola teachers began their training on violin, which is standard and not a concern as long as the teacher has spent significant time on the viola itself. When choosing a teacher, ask about their viola-specific experience and what chamber music and solo repertoire they work through with students. A teacher whose professional experience is primarily orchestral may approach the instrument differently from one who has a chamber music background, and knowing this helps match expectations.

Three violists whose recordings are worth close attention: Yuri Bashmet, the Russian violist who has done more than anyone to establish the instrument’s solo concert career, with a catalog of recordings across the major repertoire. Kim Kashkashian brings a searching, contemplative depth to her playing that demonstrates the instrument’s inner voice with particular clarity. Tabea Zimmermann is one of the most complete violists of her generation and her recordings of Bartók and the German Romantic repertoire are essential for any student working in those areas.

The Stamitz Viola Concerto is the standard early concerto work and one of the most approachable pieces written for the instrument in solo context. Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G major is a beautiful Baroque work that most students encounter in their first years. The Bartók Viola Concerto — left unfinished at the composer’s death and completed by Serly — is the long-term horizon for advanced students and one of the most dramatic and demanding works in the solo repertoire.

Use more bow than you think you need — the viola requires a longer, heavier bow stroke than the violin to project, and students who under-bow produce a thin, unfocused tone that better technique instantly transforms.
