About Me

I have spent the last twenty years or so working in the film and television business as a composer , conductor, arranger, and orchestrator. I am looking for piano students from beginning to intermediate with an emphasis on traditional methods and classical music, especially those who would like to mix some music theory in with their lessons. I am also interested in teaching composition and orchestration at any level including college prep. Instruction in the Sibelius and Digital Performer (Mac) music programs could also be integrated into these lessons.

Adult students welcome!

My Musical Education Background

My music education includes Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music Composition degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as well as completion of the University of Southern California one year graduate film music program.

I have also learned 'on the job' with established film composers such as Robert Folk, Shirley Walker, David Newman, Richard Gibbs, and many others. You can see a partial list of my industry credits at IMDB.

Genres and Subjects Taught

I am flexible in using any traditional method of piano teaching and will teach with a slant toward classical music performance. Intermediate literature could include well known composers such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Chopin.

Music theory (intermediate to advanced) would be approached traditionally through methods such as Piston, Persichetti, and Fux(counterpoint). Composition studies would be integrated with music theory but not be limited to strictly traditional approaches. Computer music programs such as Sibelius and Digital Performer could be integrated into these studies.

Lesson Rates

Rates vary from $25 to $40, based on Student's skill level and length of lesson, preferably paid once a month in advance. I will try to schedule make-up lessons when needed.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

Younger students should have at least basic reading skills (2nd or 3rd grade). I don't teach by rote. I also enjoy working with adults of any age and skill level.

My Certifications and Awards

I am a member of the Musician's Union Local 47 as well as the Society of Composers and Lyricists.

My Musical Influences

Favorite classical/concert composers include Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Stravinsky and Copland. In addition to those in the industry I have had the privilege of working with, favorite and influential film composers include Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, James Horner, Danny Elfman, and Howard Shore.
