My Musical Influences

I have always been inspired by the heroic story of Beethoven, as the ultimate story of triumph over tragedy. My "Classical" influences include the creative interpretations of Glenn Gould, Alfred Cortot, Anne Queffélec, and Martha Argerich on the works of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Ravel, Sibelius, etc.

Chamber music, orchestral works, and my experiences playing the violin throughout high school and college have influenced my work at the piano. I enjoy 'orchestrating' and 'voicing' my pieces, thinking of my two hands as a symphony of 10-fingers. (especially in Baroque music where my left-hand is a cello and right-hand is a violin, etc.)

Popular and world music also factors into my musical stylings. I enjoy playing good piano transcriptions and arrangements of film scores and pop music from Eminem to Lady Gaga.

I also have a special affinity for tango music, especially the works of Astor Piazzolla.

Student Reviews

Williamstown, NJ

Melissa is an excellent teacher! My kids love learning piano with her and are always looking forward to their lessons. She is friendly and very patient with children. My children previously studied at a music store nearby. I chose Melissa because her rates are the same and she uses a grand piano instead of the keyboards used at the music store. (H. Rauscher, Williamstown, NJ)

Tampa, FL

I am a current adult student of Melissa's. She has been excellent for the entire year I've studied with her. She is always willing to let me go at my own pace. I've learned an incredible amount of literature over this time. You have to be willing to work for anything you want to do, even if it is recreational. I'm very happy with my lessons. Her prices are more than fair for her knowledge and experience. (J. Miller, Tampa, FL)
