About Me
I received my musical training as a Piano Major at both Hartt College of Music in Hartford, CT and later at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, where I was selected to perform the Bach Concerto in D Minor with the Longy Chamber Orchestra in 1978. Since 1980, I taught piano alongside my husband for 30 years at our home studio in New Bedford, MA, and have continued teaching online lessons since his passing. I enjoyed playing many duet recitals with my husband (as pictured in my photo). I am a published composer of educational piano music with Alfred Publishing Company and formerly with FJH Music Company since 1993. My publications include a Sightplaying series, 9 other collections, and over 20 sheet music solos. ,
My Musical Education Background
I studied piano beginning at age 8, and loved piano so much that I wrote at age 9 that I wanted to be a piano teacher when I grew up. In my Senior year in High School (1974) I won the Fall River Symphony Concerto Contest and performed the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major with the orchestra, as well as winning First Place in the Massachusetts Music Teachers Piano Contest. I received a scholarship as a Piano Major at Hartt College of Music in 1974 and later attended Longy School of Music in Cambridge as a Piano Major. In 1978 I was selected to perform the Bach Piano Concerto in D minor with the Longy Chamber Orchestra. After my marriage in 1980 I started a piano studio with my husband, a New England Conservatory of Music graduate, teaching students of all ages and performing duet recitals. Since 1993, I have composed educational piano music with many publications by Alfred Publishing Company and FJH Music.
Genres and Subjects Taught
Although I am classically trained, I try to individualize the repertoire to the student's interests. Besides Classical music, I teach pop music if the student desires, including ballads, folk, and jazz. I do like starting beginning students with the Piano Adventures series by the Fabers, supplemented with sheet music solos for fun. My students have enjoyed playing the many piano solos I have composed myself, and find it exciting to play published pieces written by their teacher! Since 2020, I have adapted my Studio with equipment to teach online, and have continued to teach online to this day.utilizing both Zoom and FaceTime. I like to incorporate Music Theory concepts and if applicable, Music History during the lessons, usually integrated with the study of a particular piece. I love teaching Music Theory as I find it fascinating and received excellent training at Longy School of Music in this area, and would be open to teaching just Music Theory on an Elementary to Intermediate level.if there is an interest.
Lesson Rates
My tuition rates for School Year 2025-26 are monthly rates based on a calendar of 36 scheduled lessons during the school year - September - June. Currently the monthly rate for 30 minute lessons is $120., and the monthly rate for 40 minute lessons is $145. There is an annual Registration Fee of $40 which includes participation in my Annual Spring Recital Video which is pretaped by students performing their recital pieces in their own home. Make-up lessons are only eligible to be given if at least 48 hour notice is given.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I love teaching beginners of all ages, from age 5 to Seniors, and also students of all levels from early elementary to late intermediate levels for the most part. Very young students would need to have an adult (or older sibling) attend the online lessons with them to help out until they are old enough to do online lessons by themselves. Note reading is emphasized as an important skill to be attained with the help of certain music aids, including flash cards, notespellers, and the music app, Note Rush.
My Certifications and Awards
Besides my piano training at Hartt School of Music and Longy School of Music, I was a longtime member and Past President of the Local Chapter of MTNA in Massachusetts as well as a 40 year member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers where I was adjudicator for one year. In 1974, I had the honor of being chosen to perform the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major with the Fall River Symphony Orchestra, as well as being awarded 1st Place in the Annual Piano Competition sponsored by the MTNA in Boston. Also, in 1978 I had the honor of performing the Bach D minor Piano Concerto with the Longy School of Music Chamber Orchestra.
My Musical Influences
My musical influences include my piano professor at Hartt School of Music, Raymond Hanson, and most importantly, my husband Steve, who was a concert pianist for a short period of time and whom I studied with for a time before I was married. Duet playing with my husband taught me so much about collaboration in music making and in expression. .Also my Music Theory professor, Miss Judy Ross, at Longy School of Music had a profound influence on me when I attended Longy as her teaching techniques for Music Theory and Ear Training were impeccable and gave me the confidence to try my hand at composing piano pieces for my students later on. Lastly, my collaboration with composer/editor Victoria McArthur on my publication series, "Let's Sightplay!" (FJH Music) gave me many insights into what works pedagogically with students and inspired me to move forward with my composing.
