About Me

Jaclyn Burke grew up in a non-musical military family.  She began violin at age 11 after begging her parents for more than a year.  She went on to study violin performance in college and there became inspired by Suzuki's teaching philosophy.  Jaclyn immediately pursued Suzuki teacher training and decided to devote her life to making beautiful hearts through music. She now has her own young studio in her home in Battle Creek where she lives with her husband and two young kids.

My Musical Education Background

Jaclyn Burke studied violin performance at Grand Valley State University.  She has attended the Meadowmount school of music in New York, and toured London with the GVSU chamber orchestra.  Jaclyn is an alumni of the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra and the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony.  She took her Suzuki Teacher Training at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp with Wendy Azrak.

Genres and Subjects Taught

Jaclyn Burke's studio is based on the philosophy of teaching of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.  This philosophy is summed up in the concepts of "Mother Tongue Method" and "Every Child Can Learn."  Children learn to play the violin at a high level at a young age, but it is important to see the growth of the whole child.  In this method, music is a means for gaining self-confidence and beauty within.

The Mother Tongue Method is the process of helping a child learn the violin like very child learns to speak.  No child fails to learn their own language.  Some take more time than other children, but all learn.  When a child learns to speak they do so by being immersed in the language.  They hear it all around them, especially from their parents and their peers.  THey see everyone communicating and wish to do so.  If they see their parents and peers playing violin, they wish to do so.  By providing a positive, bun environment and gently guiding the child, a Suzuki teacher will help a child to learn violin so that it comes naturally like learning to speak.  The Suzuki Method involves individual lessons, group lessons, and parent participation.  The goal of theis method, as Dr. Suzuki stated in his book, "Nurtured by Love" is "not to create great musicians, but to create beautiful hearts."  This MotherTongue Method develops discipline, memory, and good focus in children, helping them to become adults with beautiful hearts.
