Over the past 15 years, I have taught over 200 different students individually, in partners and in groups, including children from the age of 3, teenagers, adults and seniors. I currently teach students ranging from the absolute beginner to very advanced pianist, including those sitting for diploma or high school certificate exams.
I also teach uniquely designed and age appropriate Pre-School Piano Lessons for the beginner aged 3-4 years of age using a variety of activities in the lesson, including piano playing, rhythm tapping, listening and discerning musical patterns and pitches, and simple composing. I have seen the benefits of starting a child as young as 3 years old using coloured notes and fun characters to aid in reading music, with those children gaining an enthusiasm for music and piano playing that lasts for years to come, as they continue to progress.
I love music of all styles, whether it is classical, jazz or contemporary, and enjoys teaching any student who is eager to learn and improve their skills. I am a friendly, patient, and committed teacher who cares about the progress of each of my students. One of my greatest joy is seeing the smile on a student's face when they finally master a piece, finish a book or pass an exam with flying colours. I also find satisfaction in correcting or improving piano technique, re-sparking interest in piano playing, and strengthening the weak areas of a student's musicianship, as I have had experience teaching students who have transferred from other teachers due to problems or lack of interest in music with a previous teacher.
My Musical Education Background
I am an accredited teacher by the Music Teacher's Association of NSW, Australia. My qualifications from Sydney include Bachelor of Arts in Communications from UTS, the Associate Diploma of Music (Piano) from AMEB and the Graduate Diploma of Music (Classical Performance - Piano) with Distinction, from the Australian Institute of Music. A few years ago I completed my Ph.D in Music Education at The University of New South Wales (UNSW). My doctoral thesis focuses on the use of tempo and rubato (aspects of rhythm) by eminent early twentieth century and modern pianists in Chopin's piano music.
As a pianist, I have won various music awards, including 1st and 2nd prizes at Sydney eisteddfods such as Parramatta Eisteddfod, Castle Hill Festival of Performing Arts, Ryde Eisteddod, Galston Eisteddfod and the McDonald's Performing Arts Challenge. Li-San has also worked as an accompanist in Sydney for HSC and AMEB exams.
Genres and Subjects Taught
I teach piano lessons and music theory. I specialise in classical muisc, but can teach all styles, including jazz and popular music. Students learn how to read music effectively, while also learning proper technique, music theory, performance skills and playing by ear.
Li-San aims to provide the most fun and effective lessons. Li-San is a full time professional piano teacher, and is totally committed to the enjoyment, improvement and eventual musical independence of each student. Tuition includes weekly sessions at the studio, which can be either individual or partner lessons.
Full amount for the term is paid in advance of a 5-week term, as detailed in an invoice. If the student needs any books, the teacher will buy necessary books for students and add the cost in the invoice. Those taking online piano lessons will buy their books independently.
Individual Piano Lessons
Tuition for a 5 week term:
a) 30 minute lesson = $140 (preschool age children or adults)
b) 30 minute lesson + 30 minute lab (minimal supervision for lab session) = $200 (children/teens 10 years old or over)
c) 30 minute lesson + 30 minute lab (fully supervised lab session) = $280 (children 4-10 years old)
d) 45 minute lesson = $210 (adults/advanced students)
d) 45 minute lesson + 30 minute lab = $270 (advanced students)
Trial Piano Lessons
New students take a trial lesson before committing to regular lessons.
Discounted trial lesson fee:
$25 for a 30 minute lesson or $50 for 60 minute lesson. The 60 minute lesson could include teacher supervised computer lab time.
A unique aspect of Li-San's Piano Studio is the use of a computer lab in which students will be able to revise and add to the knowledge of the concepts they learn in the piano lessons. Each student will have access to a customized lab assignment book and notepad (kept in the studio), that will help track their progress as they are given tasks to do by the teacher each week. These include activities that will greatly improve sight reading ability and aural skills, and widen theory knowledge and its application in music composition. Students make much faster progress in their music playing and listening skills when taking their piano lessons in combination with computer lab sessions. All school aged children (age 5 years +) are advised to use the computer lab, while for adults, it is optional.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I teach almost any age, from the child age 3 up to senior adults. I use materials that are tailored to each student's age, abilities and individual goals.
