About Me
As an independent teacher of piano, Cathy Thoma has found many avenues to teach music in interesting and innovative ways. Private lessons, music theory, group performance classes, composition and recitals are just the beginning. Throughout her life, travel has also been a big love of hers. As she travels, she collects instruments and music from the foreign countries she visits. She feels that learning about other cultures and their music is very valuable in rounding out a student's musical eduacation.
My Musical Education Background
Thoma holds a Bachelor of Music in piano pedagogy and perfomance from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington.
Genres and Subjects Taught
Classical, Pop, Other
My Certifications and Awards
Thoma has been very involved with the Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) over the past 28 years, serving for 10 of them on the Certification Board for the State of Oregon. She has also served on various committees in her local Portland Chapter. Opportunity for her students to perfom more frequently is offered through her membership in Opus XII Recital Club. She is also a member of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity.
My Musical Influences
Thomas' earliest influence in her musical life came from her home. Growing up with her mother as a piano teacher provided constant musical exposure. She was also influenced by piano/theory professors William Doppman, Marc Taslitt & Lawrence Ebert.
