My Musical Education Background

The Rockaway Arts Academy offers music lessons in: Guitar, Voice, Piano, Drums, Bass, and Ukulele

FAQ:

WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN YOUR MUSIC LESSONS?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.

We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.

A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.

The main reason to choose the Academy as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.

If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.

WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, blues and classical.

ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
Our teachers are all either university trained or have many years of professional and performance experience.

In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level.

Genres and Subjects Taught

GUITAR LESSONS & BASS LESSONS (for ages 4 and up)
Our guitar teachers teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical guitar lessons on electric and acoustic guitars. Beginner students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of guitar method books to accomplish this and encourage students to bring CDs or their iPod to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.

PIANO LESSONS (for ages 4 and up)
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano faculty will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory, but they will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons. You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first 6 months. Our piano teachers have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the piano with you.

DRUM LESSONS (for ages 6 and up)
We have one of the most professional drum lesson rooms in Columbia, with state of the art sound proofing and a Roland drum kit for students to use. Our drum instructors teach rock, metal, jazz, funk, blues and many other styles. Drum language can be complex and our instructors will challenge any drummer with a wide variety of technical exercises designed to improve your speed and comfort. All drummers bring in their favorite drum parts to learn in their lessons and theory is encouraged. We have many drum students who play in local bands be it in rock clubs or their local churches. You do not have to purchase a drum kit to take lessons. Beginning students can learn with a drum pad and sticks for only $25.00. Students use our drum set at their lessons and do not have to bring anything except their drum sticks and a notebook.

VOICE LESSONS (for ages 5 and up)
Our voice teachers primarily focus on popular music. If you have always wanted to be a better rock, pop, country, jazz, gospel or R&B singer, then we have the right voice teachers for you. Voice students spend time each week doing physical exercises to improve their vocal range, ear training, breath control, vibrato, tone production, enunciation and more. All voice students set goals with their teacher to work on sounding like their favorite recording artists, or if they prefer, to develop their own unique voice. We not only teach singers, but also local TV and radio personalities who want to enhance their speaking voices.

CLASSES, JAMS, & ENSEMBLES
Throughout the year there are many different classes, clubs, and groups offered to help our students work and meet with fellow students in order for them to take their abilities to the next level. Some of the classes include: Theory, History of Rock and Roll, Basic Guitar, Songwriting, Home recording, soloing and much more! Our ensemble groups help students learn to communicate with other musicians and learn how to be in a real “band” situation, but with guidance from a professional musician. These classes are for students who have learned the basics and want to further their musical education and skills. We put students together with peers of the same age and ability level to ensure that everyone grows and learns at an appropriate level.

RECITALS & PERFORMANCES
We have an annual Winter Recital and annual Summer Recital for our students to participate in. In our winter recital they will play traditional holiday favorites as well as mix them with popular songs. Our students play everything from Greensleeves to Trans Siberian Orchestra! The Summer Recital is usually a themed event like songs from the Beatles catalog, movie songs, a particular decade of music, and many other themes. We have a mix of solo performances as well as full band performances.

Our last recitals have taken place locally at the Rockaway Assembly of God church. They have a 400 seat brand new facility with stage, lights, and a high tech sound & audio visual setup! The church provides DW drums, Fender, Vox, and Ampeg amps as well. Bon Jovi would be jealous of the setup that we have there! It’s really something we look forward to and are proud to put our name on.

We promise… that when you attend our recitals… you will NOT be disappointed! It is a show worth seeing! We also do various performances at coffee houses, events, the mall, and other gigs throughout the year.

Student Reviews

Rockaway, NJ

“How could you not love The Rockaway Arts Academy? The staff is SO friendly and knowledgeable AND talented! They know their instruments! This is the very first place I took guitar lessons at and I am extremely pleased with the results! I went from not knowing how to play guitar AT ALL, to playing full songs, knowing chords, and even writing my own music! They successfully taught me all the basics I need to know on my guitar. I am happy to say that I’m not just a vocalist, I am now also a MUSICIAN! I highly recommend The Rockaway Arts Academy if you are an aspiring musician looking to learn a new instrument or if you are already a musician and you are looking to brush up on your skills! Please do yourself a favor and book lessons here for yourself or someone you love!”

“I’ve been taking guitar lessons for almost 2 years now and I really love it! I learn new things every week and I look forward to being here!”

“The Rockaway Arts Academy isn’t all what you would expect from a music shop. Most places either ignore you when you come in or will tell you whatever you’d like to hear to get a sale. When you walk in The Rockaway Arts Academy it’s homey and honest. Everyone is super friendly and gives you great advice. I would know… I have been a student for a long time. That is where The Rockaway Arts Academy shines…its lessons. I had lessons for a long while and he gave me the tools and know how for success. The thing I like about having lessons is that he catered the musical experience to my needs and interests. Most music teachers have an agenda and outline of what a student MUST do. My teacher had tons of materials but did not once make me learn anything or take me a different route musically that I did not want to. He let me explore the way I wanted to and assisted me in my creative interests. My teacher helped me take my personal musical interests from interests to strengths and tools. I’ve gone on to do a lot of great things with the tools given to me as well. From playing out of the state all the time to inspiring people to do what they love. It’s been amazing and it all started because I decided to step into The Rockaway Arts Academy. No matter what your goals are in music or life or anything, there always has to be a start… a goal… and a future. So do yourself a favor and start pursuing your future now!

“The Rockaway Arts Academy is not your average place for piano lessons. It is the multi-dimensionality of The Rockaway Arts Academy that has kept me associated with it for over eight years now. I first met my guitar teacher when my daughters took guitar lessons from him and I actually started taking lessons with him as well. His easy going manner betrayed his strong business sense and understanding of what could best serve his customer base of students and musicians. I call The Rockaway Arts Academy multi-dimensional not only because they teach a number of different instruments, but because they also teach voice, songwriting, and performing. They also have stepped-outside of music to allow other local artists to display their visual artwork around the store. The Rockaway Arts Academy unselfishly serves the community and makes us all a little bit better.”

Denville, NJ

“Before I started taking lessons from The Rockaway Arts Academy, I barely knew anything more than the pentatonic scale and a couple of chords. After hearing about them from a close friend and seeing how well the lessons have helped him out, I decided to give it a shot. My teacher showed me everything from music theory to establishing my own style. Not only was he an amazing teacher but an incredible friend and someone great to talk to. The Rockaway Arts Academy helps avoid that plateau in your musical career and helps you keep growing at an exponential rate. I became 10 times the guitar player I was from going to lessons and practicing the material provided by my instructor. The lessons are pure gold and this place is the P90x of music lessons!

“I have been at The Rockaway Arts Academy for 7 years now. I started out learning simple notes and chords and worked my way up to full songs and awesome techniques I never thought I could have played when I first started! I love RAA because of their personal attention to my playing, which felt like I was being taught by one of my friends and made learning really easy. Without the help of my teachers at The Rockaway Arts Academy I couldn’t have become even close to the guitar player I am today.”

Rockaway, NJ

“My son has been going for guitar lessons at The Rockaway Arts Academy since he was 6 years old. He is 17 now and never once in all that time did we have to force him to go. This is a testament of how enjoyable his teacher and the staff make it. I myself was so impressed that I started taking lessons. RAA has taught me that you can teach an old dog new tricks. I may not be Eric Clapton but I can play quite a few songs thanks to them. I highly recommend The Rockaway Arts Academy’s services.”
